It Starts in Our Counties: How Floridians Can Take Back Local Government and Restore Accountability

Published on November 8, 2025 at 12:01 PM

Florida is changing — and not always for the better. Across the Sunshine State, county commissions and city councils are quietly spending us into oblivion, raising taxes, approving bloated budgets, and handing out sweetheart deals — all with little accountability or transparency. Property taxes keep climbing. Permit fees are rising. And government seems to grow at every level while Floridians are left footing the bill.

It’s not coming from Washington. It’s not coming from Tallahassee. The real problem is right here at home — in our towns, our cities, and our counties.

That’s why Guardians of Liberty is launching our County Captain Program, a statewide effort to recruit, train, and empower everyday Floridians to take back their local government — one county at a time.

We’re looking for three County Captains in every Florida county — dedicated, motivated, freedom-minded people who are ready to step up, organize, and lead the charge for accountability, transparency, and limited government in their communities.

If you’ve ever said to yourself, “Someone needs to do something about this,” this is your invitation — because that someone might just be you.

The Problem: Local Spending, Hidden Taxes, and Vanishing Accountability

Let’s be honest — most people don’t pay much attention to county commission meetings or city budget hearings. And local governments count on that.

Over the last decade, while Floridians were working, raising families, and running businesses, local governments have been quietly growing — and spending.

According to Florida TaxWatch, local government spending has risen faster than inflation and population growth for years. Counties and municipalities across Florida now spend over $130 billion annually, and much of that growth happens without clear public oversight or debate.

Meanwhile, property taxes — the single largest source of local government revenue — have soared. Between 2012 and 2022, Florida property tax collections increased by more than 67%, far outpacing wage growth and inflation.

Add in rising permitting costs, special assessments, and “fees” that function like hidden taxes, and you can see why Floridians are frustrated. Government at every level seems to find new ways to take more — without asking permission.

But here’s the kicker: most of this happens at the county level, not in Washington or even Tallahassee. Local boards approve these measures. Local bureaucrats enforce them. Local governments decide how much of your paycheck and property they’ll take — and how they’ll spend it.

That’s where you come in.

The Solution: Empowering Citizens to Watchdog Their Counties

Guardians of Liberty believes real change starts where people live — locally. That’s why our County Captain Program is about giving communities the tools, training, and support they need to stand up for their rights and demand accountability.

We’re building a network of Floridians who aren’t afraid to speak up, organize, and take a stand. County Captains will serve as local watchdogs and organizers, connecting neighbors, sharing information, and driving action when government steps out of line.

Each County Captain will help:

  • Monitor local issues — from property tax hikes to zoning abuse to reckless spending.
  • Organize Liberty Forums in their communities to bring residents together for honest, constructive conversations about government accountability.
  • Engage local officials by arranging meetings, testifying at hearings, and pushing for greater transparency.
  • Build community coalitions of citizens ready to take peaceful, productive action when government forgets who it serves.

You don’t have to be a political expert or seasoned activist. You just need a desire to see your community run fairly, responsibly, and with respect for individual rights. We’ll take care of the rest — from training to resources to connecting you with others who share your passion for liberty.

Why This Matters: Local Government Impacts Everything

It’s easy to get caught up in national headlines, but the truth is local government impacts your daily life far more than Washington ever will.

Your county commissioners decide how high your property taxes go.

Your city council controls local permits and zoning rules that affect your home, your business, and your wallet.

Your local school board determines how your children are taught — and how much you’ll pay for it.

When local government grows unchecked, freedom shrinks quietly.

In too many counties across Florida, local officials treat taxpayer money as their own personal piggy bank. They’ll hand out no-bid contracts, raise fees under the radar, or hide spending deep in budget documents almost no one reads.

That’s not democracy. That’s bureaucracy. And it thrives when citizens stay silent.

But history shows that when people get organized — when they shine a light on government waste and demand transparency — things start to change. Budgets shrink. Politicians listen. Communities grow stronger.

That’s the spirit behind Guardians of Liberty.

The Vision: Making America Constitutional Again

Our mission is simple but powerful: Make America Constitutional Again.

We believe the Constitution wasn’t just a founding document — it’s a living promise of limited government, fiscal responsibility, and individual liberty.

But somewhere along the way, both major parties lost sight of that. One side grew addicted to spending. The other grew comfortable with government power. And together, they’ve created a system where citizens serve government — not the other way around.

We’re here to change that.

Guardians of Liberty isn’t about party tribalism or political games. We’re not here to prop up career politicians or take sides in partisan squabbles. We’re here for Floridians — for you, your family, your business, and your freedom.

Because when government forgets its limits, it’s our duty to remind it.

The Experience: Built by a Proven Organizer

Our founder didn’t come from a political dynasty or corporate boardroom. He came from the grassroots.

A proud graduate of Riverdale High School in Fort Myers Shores, he spent over a decade working full time in community and policy organizing — fighting to make government work for people, not against them.

From pension and tax reform to criminal justice policy, he’s taken on entrenched interests, public unions, and bureaucrats — and won. He’s organized communities across the country, bringing together everyday citizens to amplify their voices to every level of government — from county commissions to Congress.

He’s not afraid of the hard fights. And neither are we.

Guardians of Liberty was born out of that same spirit — a belief that ordinary people, united around principles of freedom and accountability, can take on the biggest challenges and win.

Why Now: Because Waiting Costs Us

Every year we wait, government grows. Every time we stay silent, taxes rise. Every time we shrug and say “that’s just politics,” the bureaucrats win another inch of control over our lives.

But we have a choice.

We can keep letting politicians make decisions for us — or we can take a stand, right here, right now, in our own counties, to reclaim the principles that made America great in the first place.

The Founders didn’t wait for someone else to fix things. They took action — locally, courageously, and with conviction. That’s the same spirit we’re calling on today.

Because the truth is, change doesn’t start in Washington — it starts with us.
